Perphenazine is a medication that is used for the treatment of symptoms of schizophrenia. It can also be used to treat nausea and vomiting. This medication belongs to a family of medications called phenothiazines. Although its exact mechanism of action is not known, it is thought to lower the levels of dopamine in the brain.
Lowering the levels of dopamine can be beneficial in the treatment of symptoms of schizophrenia. Since dopamine activates the region of the brain associated with nausea and vomiting, lowering the levels of this neurotransmitter can help ease such symptoms. Schizophrenia is associated with symptoms like delusions, hallucinations, withdrawal from daily life and activities, concentration difficulty, memory problems, infrequent speech. While Perphenazine is useful in management of these symptoms, it is not meant to cure the disease.
It can be combines with psychotherapy to treat the condition. Nausea and vomiting can be caused by a number of factors ranging from flu to concussions. Although treating the root cause of the nausea and vomiting is important, it is advisable to control these symptoms using Perphenazine since excessive vomiting can result in dehydration. Perphenazine can also be used to treat conditions other than the ones it is approved for. Off label use of this medication include treatment of dementia, hiccups, agitation.
