Hormonal changes or hormonal imbalance is one of the major causes of depression. According to the studies, depression is more likely in women and when women give birth to a child and/or when she is at her menopausal stage, the chances are higher. These situations are such that there is lot of hormonal changes in the body. Hormonal imbalances that are seen post child birth and normally during menopause in women, are considered as the contributors to depression problem. Right medication, hormone therapy etc. can help to overcome this situation. People, who have thyroid problem which means imbalance in thyroid gland secretion, often face mood swings, depression and frustration.
Some of the symptoms of depression include loss of weight or weight gain, problems having sleep, change in appetite, fatigue, negative feelings etc.
High level of cortisol is associated with stress and depression. Thus people who have high cortisol levels must seek medication and treatment. Same is the case with high acetylcholine which also leads to depressive feelings. Estrogen hormone replacement therapy is used in this case. Even neurotransmitters that are low (like serotonin and dopamine) are believed to give symptoms of depression.
Apart from hormonal imbalance, there are things that also cause depression. Some other causes are family pressure, financial problems, social pressure etc.
