Postpartum depression is also known as postnatal depression. In other words, it is the clinical depression which a female faces after giving birth to the child. According to the studies, around 80% of women experience some emotional and mood changes or disturbances after their pregnancy. There are feelings like fright, loneliness, guilt etc.
For most of the women, this phase of baby blues is a temporary one and lasts for about 1-2 weeks after delivery. But in some cases, this remains for a longer time and interferes in the ability of the woman to take care of her child and takes form of serious postpartum depression. Normally during postpartum depression a woman worries about baby’s health, has negative thoughts that something bad will happen with the baby etc. And due to this, she is not able to take proper care of her baby. And when there is severe postpartum depression there might be suicidal thoughts and thoughts of harming the baby.
Women who have the history of previous depression, mental illness, marital problem, loss o f employment due to pregnancy or for any other reason, pregnancy loss etc. are at a higher risk to face postpartum depression after the birth of the child. The main reason why postpartum depression must occur can be hormonal changes, change in lifestyle after baby’s birth, negative self image or emotional disturbances.
