Prozac liquid is comprised of fluoxetine hydrochloride. Fluoxetine hydrochloride is designated as (±)-N-methyl-3-phenyl- 3 -[(α,α,α-trifluoro-p-tolyl)oxy] propylamine hydrochloride. Its empirical formula is C17H18F3NO•HCl and it has a molecular weight of 345.79. Prozac is available in both liquid and capsule form. The liquid form of the medication is available only in a single strength formulation. A 5 ml spoonful of Prozac liquid contains 20 milligrams of fluoxetine hydrochloride. In addition to this, the mixture also contains benzoic acids, purified water, sucrose, glycerin, and flavoring agents. Prozac liquid belongs to a class of anti-depressant medications called selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors. Serotonin is the body’s feel good hormone. Imbalances in the levels of serotonin in the brain can result in problems like depression. Prozac liquid works by blocking the re-uptake of serotonin. As a result, more serotonin is retained in the brain. This results in a calming effect and overall improvement in mood. Prozac is widely prescribed the world over for the treatment of disorders like depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, and bulimia. Although it is generally well tolerated, there are some side effects associated with this medication like headaches, nausea, weakness, dry mouth, anxiety.
