Although Prozac is generally well tolerated, there are some side effects associated with the medication. Common side effects associated with the medication includes insomnia, somnolence, headaches, nausea, fatigue, dry mouth, anxiety, anorexia, nervousness. Some patients who have taken Prozac have reported feeling feverish and experiencing chills. This is called the flu syndrome.
Digestive system disturbances like bloating, dyspepsia, constipation, flatulence, vomiting have also been reported in some cases. Decreased libido, sexual dysfunction are also seen in a percentage of people who have taken the medication. This side effect is seen in both men and women. Some patients have reported that this medication results in taste perversion and vision disturbances. Some female patients have also reported menstrual irregularities while on Prozac.
As with all SSRI medications, priapism or an abnormal erection of the penis even in the absence of sexual desire, is also seen in men who take Prozac. Some rare side effects of the medication include photosensitivity, cardiac arrhythmia, duodenal or peptic ulcer, delusions, and purpuric rashes on the skin. Scientists have observed that Prozac can cause suicidal tendencies, aggressive behavior and violence in some people.
