Bipolar disorder is commonly misunderstood to be depression; however the bipolar disorder is a mental illness in which the patient experiences periods or bouts of mania or depression. These are periods where the patient may suffer elevated moods for a certain time frame and then slip back into depression. Patients suffering from bipolar disorder may experience extreme moods and constant mood swings.
At times it is quite difficult to judge whether the mental illness can be termed as depression or bipolar disorder as the symptoms are almost the same. However, there are some peculiar points that may be experienced by patients suffering from the bipolar disorder, such as, people getting unfriendly vibes from others or a family history of the bipolar disease, a history of other mental illnesses such as depression etc.
To detect bipolar disorder and to prevent misdiagnosis, it is important for the patient to share every possible detail with the psychiatrist, for the doctor to be able to accurately judge and treat the illness. Bipolar disorder and depression have a few symptoms in common such as mood swings, suicidal tendencies, detachment from routine life etc. Even though the symptoms of both the illnesses are similar, bipolar disorder should be handled with much more care as compared to a depression case.
