What are the Symptoms of Postpartum Depression?

Postpartum depression symptoms are usually noticed any time from 24 hours to a few months time after birth of the baby or delivery. It is vital to seek medical attention when symptoms like weight loss, sleep disturbances, anxiety, stress, frustration, feelings of guilt, negative self image, lower sex drive, mood swings, problem in concentrating, etc.  Some other symptoms that create discomfort are problems in breathing, dizziness, nausea, insomnia, rapid heartbeat etc.

Mood swings and weepiness are the most common symptoms seen in a woman after child birth. The reason why there might be postpartum depression is that she feels loaded with additional responsibility and feels disturbed because there is change in the daily routine. She feels that she is no more attractive and feels negative about herself. She feels that her old identity is lost. All these feelings give rise to postpartum depression.

Sometimes, this leads to even worse emotional and mental condition and that is postpartum psychosis. The symptoms include agitation, mood swings, suicidal feelings etc. In this case, apparently the woman may appear as fine and recovered. But within there are feelings like committing suicide, hurting the infant etc. However, this condition is rare. It is therefore important to seek medical help at the earliest.
