Perphenazine is used to manage symptoms of schizophrenia and also for the treatment of severe nausea and vomiting. This medication is meant for adults only as it has not been approved for use in children. The dosage varies depending upon the intensity of the symptoms. In case of people with moderate symptoms of schizophrenia, who do not require hospitalization, the initial recommended dosage is 4 to 8 mg of Perphenazine daily.
The dosage must be reduced gradually until the minimum dosage at which the symptoms can be managed is attained. In case of people with severe form o schizophrenia who have been hospitalized for treatment, the dosage ranges from 8 to 16 mg per day. It is not recommended to give more than 64 mg of Perphenazine in one day. In case Perphenazine is used for the management of nausea and vomiting in adults, the recommended dosage range is 8 to 16 mg daily.
The dosage should be divided for administration at different points in the day. In some cases, the patient may need to receive as much as 24 mg Perphenazine per day before the symptoms ease. The dosage must be scaled down as the symptoms reduce. A point to remember is that the plasma concentrations of this medication is increased in geriatric patients. Therefore, lower doses are recommended for elderly people.
