How to Take Prozac

The oral formulation of Prozac is available in different strengths while the liquid form is available in a single strength formulation where one 5 ml spoonful contains 20 mg of fluoxetine hydrochloride. The recommended dosage of the medication varies depending on the condition which is being addressed and its severity. For the treatment of major depressive disorder, it is recommended to take 20 mg of Prozac per day.

If there is no improvement observed after several weeks, the dosage can be increased. However, it should not exceed 80mg per day. In case of obsessive compulsive disorder, the initial recommended dose is 20 mg of Prozac per day. The dose can be increased if there is no satisfactory improvement but it should not exceed 80 mg per day. In case of children and adolescents, the dosage should be in the range of 10 to 60 mg per day.

The recommended dosage range of Prozac for the treatment of bulimia is 20-60 mg per day whereas in case of panic disorder, the recommended dosage is 10 to 60 mg per day. When Prozac is prescribed in combination with olanzapine for the treatment of depression associated with bipolar disorder the recommended initial dosage is 5 mg olanzapine and 20mg fluoxetine. This medication should always be taken under the supervision of a medical practitioner. Never stop taking the medication or alter dosage without consulting a doctor.
