The oral formulation of Prozac is available in different strengths while the liquid form is available in a single strength formulation where one 5 ml spoonful contains 20 mg of fluoxetine hydrochloride. The recommended dosage of the medication varies depending on the condition which is being addressed and its severity. For the treatment of major depressive disorder, it is recommended to take 20 mg of Prozac per day.
If there is no improvement observed after several weeks, the dosage can be increased. However, it should not exceed 80mg per day. When Prozac is prescribed in combination with olanzapine for the treatment of depression associated with bipolar disorder the recommended initial dosage is 5 mg olanzapine and 20mg fluoxetine.
