What is unipolar depression?

One of the three psycho-medical conditions that describe the different types of depression or psychiatric illnesses is commonly known as unipolar depression, and can also be referred to as reactive depression. Of all three types of depression, unipolar depression is one that is least severe, and it affects as many as 6 to 10 percent of all adults. Events that can occur either directly or indirectly to an individual that suffers with unipolar depression would include some type of illness, a side effect that has been caused by a drug, or a major event that has occurred in the person’s life.

Some of the most severe symptoms that occur in individuals that suffer from unipolar depression would include the following.

    • Libido that has diminished
    • Thoughts that are suicidal
    • Gastrointestinal disorders
    • No longer caring about life and various activities
    • Various sleep disorders
    • Loss in weight
    • An attitude that is negative
